KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th March, 2019) US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale said on Thursday following his meetings with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and presidential hopeful Volodymyr Zelensky that the United States does not support any of the Ukrainian presidential candidates."America supports the people of Ukraine and the democratic process, not any particular candidate. This will be a key test of Ukraine's democratic progress and development, we expect free and fair elections," Hale said at a press conference, adding that he met several candidates, including Zelensky.
Hale noted that the United States was interested in the democratic nature of the election and would continue to cooperate with Kiev regardless of who won the vote.
Earlier in the day, Poroshenko and Hale discussed the upcoming election in Ukraine and the role of US assistance in the implementation of reforms in the country.
The presidential election in Ukraine is scheduled for March 31. Zelensky remains the front-runner of Ukraine's presidential race, while Poroshenko is projected to win around 17 percent of vote.
