MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th March, 2019) At least 27 Taliban militants were neutralized by the Afghan Armed Forces during a special operation in the country's north, local media reported, citing military sources.

The operation was launched on Wednesday in the Imam Sahib district of the Kunduz province following the capture of a security checkpoint by members of the Taliban group, the TOLOnews broadcaster said.

The security forces reported to have retaken control of the security post during the special operation.

In late February, Afghan security forces said they had killed Qari Sahid, a top commander of the Taliban, who was allegedly involved in coordinating high-profile attacks in Kabul, in an airstrike in the central province of Wardak.

Afghanistan has been fighting the Taliban for almost two decades and, at one point, the group controlled almost three-quarters of the country. Following US intervention in 2001, Afghanistan regained control over the territories, but continues to fight Taliban forces throughout the country.
