Congressmen Investigating Reports Of Voter Suppression In US State Of Georgia

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th March, 2019) The House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is investigating voting irregularities in recent elections in the US state of Georgia, according to a letter Committee Chair Elijah Cummings and Subcommittee on Civil Rights Chair Jamie Raskin to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp on Wednesday.

"The Committee on Oversight and Reform is investigating recent reports of serious problems with voter registration, voter access, and other matters affecting the ability of people in Georgia to exercise their right to vote," the congressmen wrote. "The Committee is particularly concerned by reports that Georgians faced unprecedented challenges with registering to vote and significant barriers to casting their votes during the 2018 election."

The congressmen pointed out that Georgia authorities canceled more than 1.4 million voter registrations in recent years and placed a hold on 53,000 voter registration applications ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

In addition, the lawmakers said that since 2012, local authorities have closed more than 200 polling stations across the state and reportedly considered closing nearly all polling sites in one majority African American county.

In the United States' reportedly most watched governor race last fall, Kemp narrowly defeated Democrat Stacey Abrams. The election was marred by accusations of voter fraud and election mismanagement from both parties.
