US Senators Introduce Bill to Repeal Iraq War Authorities

US lawmakers proposed legislation on Wednesday to formally end authorization for the Gulf and Iraq wars, Senator Tim Kaine's office said in a press release

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th March, 2019) US lawmakers proposed legislation on Wednesday to formally end authorization for the Gulf and Iraq wars, Senator Tim Kaine's office said in a press release.

"Kaine and Todd Young introduced a bipartisan bill to repeal the 1991 and 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against Iraq," the release said. "The legislation will formally end the authorizations for the Gulf and Iraq wars - 28 and 17 years, respectively, after these AUMFs were first passed, reasserting Congress' vital role in not only declaring wars, but in ending them."

A repeal of these AUMFs would recognize the strong partnership between the United States and Iraq, the release said.

Young, a Republican and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in the release he looks forward to working with his colleagues in the committee to advance this bill.

The release explained that this bill is an effort to prevent any potential misuse of these authorizations and to strengthen congressional oversight over war powers. This measure would not impact the US campaign against the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia), the release added.
