According to the agency, Lee Myung-bak filed a request for release on bail on January 29, citing, in particular, the deterioration of health.
Last October, a court in Seoul sentenced the former president to 15 years in prison on corruption charges.
Lee served as president between 2008 and 2013, he was succeeded by Park Geun-hye, who was impeached in December 2016 as a result of a bribery scandal.
