Sixty Percent of Ukrainians Say Economic Situation in Country Worsened - Survey

More than a half of Ukrainians believe that the economic situation in the country worsened over the past year, Kiev-based sociological Rating group said on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th March, 2019) More than a half of Ukrainians believe that the economic situation in the country worsened over the past year, Kiev-based sociological Rating group said on Monday.

"Only 10 percent believe that the economic situation in Ukraine has improved over the last 12 months, while 60 percent have experienced a deterioration," the non-governmental research group said publishing the results of the survey.

The poll was conducted on February 19-28 in all regions of Ukraine with the exception of the territory of Donbas, which is not controlled by Kiev, among 2,500 adult respondents.

On January 1, the minimum wage in Ukraine increased by 12 percent to 4,173 hryvnias ($155). On January 9, Yuriy Odarchenko, a lawmaker from Ukrainian opposition Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) political party, noted that this rise would not be noticeable since the country experienced hikes in tariffs, taxes and food prices.

In January, the International Monetary Fund released a report, saying that efforts to create "a more dynamic, open, and competitive economy" in Ukraine had fallen "short of expectations." The document added that the country's economy "still faces important challenges" and is "vulnerable to shocks."

According to the World Bank analysis from October 2018, investor confidence in Ukraine is being held back by "delays in key reforms, Ukraine's large financing needs, and uncertainty surrounding the 2019 elections."
