Brussels Expects Gas Directive Changes to Enter Force Before Nord Stream 2 Completed

The European Commission expects Gas Directive amendments to enter force before the completion of Nord Stream 2 pipeline and to apply to it, Dominique Ristori, the head of the European Commission's directorate-general for energy, said Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th March, 2019) The European Commission expects Gas Directive amendments to enter force before the completion of Nord Stream 2 pipeline and to apply to it, Dominique Ristori, the head of the European Commission's directorate-general for energy, said Monday.

"On the gas directive, yes, we're expecting quick entry into force, before the completion of Nord Stream 2, so directive will apply to that project," Ristori said at a press conference.

The proposed amendments would extend internal EU rules on energy to offshore pipelines, which would affect Nord Stream 2 expected to carry gas from Russia to Germany.

The proposed amendments reportedly caused a rift in the bloc, as Paris indicated last month it would support the changes to the directive. However, Germany, a strong Nord Stream 2 backer, announced later in February it reached compromise with France.
