Syria to Start Forming Convoys to Evacuate Refugees From Rukban Camp

Syrian authorities will start on Friday, in consultation with Russia, to organize humanitarian convoys in order to enable the return of the refugees staying in the Rukban camp to the places of their permanent residence

DAMASCUS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st March, 2019) Syrian authorities will start on Friday, in consultation with Russia, to organize humanitarian convoys in order to enable the return of the refugees staying in the Rukban camp to the places of their permanent residence.

Over 40,000 refugees are currently staying in the camp, located within the US-controlled zone in Syria's At-Tanf. Conditions in the camp have been becoming increasingly dire over the recent years, given the limited aid deliveries.

"From March 1, 2019, the Syrian government, in consultation with Russia, will organize additional humanitarian convoys for the Rukban refugee camp residents' voluntary return to the places of permanent residence in Khalidiya, Al-Amarah, Palmyra, Mheen, Al-Quaryatayn, and the suburbs of Damascus, Homs, Raqqa and Aleppo," the joint Russia-Syria coordination center on refugee repatriation said in a statement.

The convoys' entrance to the "illegally US-occupied" zone will be carried out in coordination with the United Nations, the coordination center specified.

The Russian and Syrian General Staffs said in a joint statement on Wednesday that while around 95 percent of the Rukban refugees wanted to leave the camp, the United States was preventing their exit.
