Brussels Says Needs to Analyze Ukrainian Court's Ruling to Strike Down Anti-Corruption Law

The European Commission needs to thoroughly analyze the decision of Ukraine's highest court to strike down a law against "illicit enrichment," the commission's spokesman said Thursday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th February, 2019) The European Commission needs to thoroughly analyze the decision of Ukraine's highest court to strike down a law against "illicit enrichment," the commission's spokesman said Thursday.

Ukraine's Constitutional Court ruled on Wednesday to remove the law against "illicit enrichment" from the country's criminal code, arguing that it breached the suspects' right to presumption of innocence. The court suggested that other laws would cover corruption offenses.

"Commissioner [Johannes] Hahn met [Ukraine's] Vice Prime Minister [Gennadiy] Zubko yesterday, who assured that illicit enrichment would remain criminal offense ... What we now need is to analyze in detail the decision of the Constitutional Court," Carlos Martin Ruiz De Gordejuela told reporters, when asked about the commission's reaction.

Hahn, the commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement, tweeted on Wednesday that he had been reassured by Kiev that illicit enrichment would remain a criminal offense.

The law was introduced in 2015 as part of the reforms that helped Ukraine receive loans from international organizations.
