France to Meet Energy Demand Despite Oil Exploration Phaseout - Petroleum Association

France will find ways to meet its energy demands despite its plan to halt oil and gas exploration by 2040 in a bid to protect the environment, Isabelle Muller, the director general of French Union of Petroleum Industries (UFIP), told Sputnik on Tuesday

LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th February, 2019) France will find ways to meet its energy demands despite its plan to halt oil and gas exploration by 2040 in a bid to protect the environment, Isabelle Muller, the director general of French Union of Petroleum Industries (UFIP), told Sputnik on Tuesday.

As part of France's efforts to meet the Paris climate agreement goals, the French parliament decided to stop all future oil and gas production and exploration by 2040.

"We have a very diverse panel of producers. We have strong import mostly from Africa, also middle East and Russia. And of course North Sea. With this, we have a very diverse set of importers in France, this will be enough. At the moment, our production is very minimal, it's less than 1 percent of our consumption," Muller said on the sidelines of the International Petroleum Week conference in London.

Under the law passed by the French parliament in December 2017, no new exploration licenses can be granted, while old ones will no longer be renewed.

Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which went into force in 2016, brought together next to 200 countries hoping to slow down the global average temperature increase. Each country sets its own goals and develops plans for achieving them.
