Freeland Calls For 'Peaceful Transition' In Venezuela Amid Effort To Intensify Sanctions

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th February, 2019) Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland in a statement called for unity in supporting a peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela.

"Now, more than ever, we must stand together in support of a peaceful transition to democracy, led by the Venezuelan people," Freeland said via Twitter on Monday.

Earlier, Freeland told reporters that Ottawa and its partners are discussing ways to expand the Venezuela sanctions list to "have even more bite," according to Reuters.

A UN Security Council meeting is being held on Tuesday over the crisis in Venezuela just days after the United States and its allies failed to force unauthorized humanitarian aid across the South American country's borders.

Last month, Maduro accused Washington of trying to orchestrate a coup after US-backed Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president. Russia, China, Cuba, Bolivia and a number of other states reaffirmed their support for Maduro as Venezuela's only legitimate president after the United States and several allies recognized Guaido.
