South Korean President Moon Jae-in Urges Aides to Prepare for Economic Cooperation With Pyongyang

South Korean President Moon Jae-in urged his advisers on Monday to be ready to resume economic cooperation with North Korea and not miss the chance to become a leader in its neighbor's development in the event that the North Korean economy opens

TOKYO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th February, 2019) South Korean President Moon Jae-in urged his advisers on Monday to be ready to resume economic cooperation with North Korea and not miss the chance to become a leader in its neighbor's development in the event that the North Korean economy opens.

"If North Korea opens its economy, neighboring countries, international organizations, and international capital will be involved [in its development]. We should not miss the opportunity to take a leading position on this path," the South Korean leader said at a meeting with his aides.

Seoul will support US and North Korean leaders and hopes for a successful outcome of their upcoming summit, which, according to Moon, is key to ending the instability on the Korean Peninsula and the threat of war, as well as to advancing into the era of a peaceful economy.

"I highly appreciate the decision of [North Korean leader] Kim Jong Un to move from the past to the future along the path of economic development instead of the development of nuclear weapons," Moon said.

Kim and US President Donald Trump will hold their second meeting on February 27-28 in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi.

The first US-North Korean summit, held last June in Singapore, resulted in an agreement stipulating that Pyongyang would make efforts to promote complete denuclearization in exchange for the United States and South Korea freezing their military drills. However, no specific steps have been taken since then. Pyongyang expects Washington to fulfill the agreements reached, and the US administration is waiting for new steps on the part of North Korean nuclear disarmament.
