AMMAN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st February, 2019) A Syrian delegation will participate in the conference of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) in Amman in early March, during which the issue of the country's readmission to the League of Arab States (LAS) will be discussed, a source in the Jordanian parliament told Sputnik.

"The Syrian parliamentary delegation will take part in the conference of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union," the source said.

In late January, a source told Sputnik that Atef Tarawneh, the speaker of the lower house of the Jordanian parliament, invited his Syrian counterpart, Hammouda Sabbagh, to participate in the AIPU conference.

Meanwhile, during his visit to Syria in February, the head of the Jordanian parliament's committee for Jordanian-Syrian friendship, Tareq Khouri, said that the issue of Damascus' return to LAS would be discussed during the AIPU conference slated for March 3-4.

The 22-nation Arab League suspended Syria's membership in 2011 after a war broke out in the country. Several member states then recalled their ambassadors from Syria. Last year, they began making steps to re-engage Damascus and reopen embassies in what is widely being perceived as an attempt to bring Syria back in.

Earlier in February, Abdullatif Abdulrahman Obaid, the director of the LAS center in Tunisia, told Sputnik that the issue of Syria's possible return to LAS was not on the agenda for the organization's summit in Tunis, scheduled for March 31, but still had a chance of being added to it.

Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Sudan, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates would welcome Syria's return to the Arab League, a source in Brussels told Sputnik earlier in February.
