Poroshenko Has Become 'President of War' - Russian Ambassador to UN Vassily Nebenzia

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has become the president of war as opposed to a leader of peace as he promised, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said during a General Assembly meeting on Wednesday

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th February, 2019) Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has become the president of war as opposed to a leader of peace as he promised, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said during a General Assembly meeting on Wednesday.

"Poroshenko declared himself to be the president of peace promising immediately to put an end to the conflict in Donbas, but he has become the president of war, which continues to this day," Nebenzia said.

The Russian envoy pointed out that on February 12 the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) monitoring mission in Ukraine said that there are no regular Russian forces in the eastern part of the country.

In April 2014, Kiev launched a military operation against the self-proclaimed republics in the Donbas region which refused to recognize the new Ukrainian government that came to power in what they perceived to be a coup. The conflicting sides signed the Minsk peace accords in February 2015 to end the fighting in the crisis-torn region, but the situation has remained tense, with both parties accusing each other of ceasefire violations.
