US Trade Rep to Testify to Congress on China Talks Next Week - House Committee

The House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee has invited US Trade Representative Robert E. Lighthizer to testify next week on ongoing bilateral trade talks with China, Committee Chairman Richard Neal announced in a press release on Wednesday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th February, 2019) The House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee has invited US Trade Representative Robert E. Lighthizer to testify next week on ongoing bilateral trade talks with China, Committee Chairman Richard Neal announced in a press release on Wednesday.

"The only invited witness is Ambassador Robert E. Lighthizer, United States Trade Representative," the release said. "In view of the limited time available, oral testimony at this hearing will be from the invited witness only."

The committee urged other individuals and organizations to submit written statements on the topic, which would be reviewed for possible inclusion in a printed record of the hearings.

Lighthizer has played a leading role in the ongoing US negotiations with China aimed at resolving a crippling tariff dispute between the two countries.

The dispute erupted last June, when President Donald Trump announced that Washington would impose 25 percent tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods in a bid to fix the US-Chinese trade deficit. Since then, the two countries have exchanged several rounds of trade tariffs, imposing duties on hundreds of billions of Dollars worth of goods.

At the G20 summit in Argentina in December, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on a truce in the tariff war to allow room for a new trade agreement. The truce is set to expire on March 1, but Trump has indicated that he could decide to extend the deadline for negotiations beyond that date.
