WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th February, 2019) The US Army awarded two contracts worth more than a half billion Dollars combined to launch initial production of an armored vehicle that will replace the Vietnam-era M113 fleet, UK defense contractor BAE Systems said in a press release.

"The US Army has awarded BAE Systems two contract modifications worth up to $575 million for the low-rate initial production of the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV)," the release said on Tuesday.

The AMPV program, the release added, provides the US Army with a more survivable and mobile fleet of vehicles to replace the Vietnam War-era M113 armored personnel carrier.

Production will include five variants of the AMPV which meet Army force protection and all-terrain mobility requirements: command and control, general purpose, medical evacuation, medical treatment, and mortar carrier, according to the release.

BAE Systems delivered the first AMPV prototype in 2016. The US army, in December of 2014, awarded BAE $1.2 billion for engineering, manufacturing, development and initial production of the AMPV.
