St. Petersburg Building Collapse Caused by Improper Handling of Construction Materials

ST. PETERSBURG (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th February, 2019) A partial collapse of one of the buildings of St. Petersburg's ITMO University was caused by improper storage of construction materials and structure overload, Vladimir Kirillov, the city's deputy governor, said on Sunday.

The incident occurred late on Saturday at one of the buildings of the National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (ITMO), where construction works were taking place. No casualties or immediate injuries were reported following the collapse. Nearly 90 people were evacuated.

"[Causes are] improper storage of construction materials and structure overload. We know those who were on subcontract work. The rest will be revealed during the investigation," Kirillov told reporters.

A criminal case on violation of safety rules during construction works was initiated in connection with the incident.
