Russia will help Syria to open two humanitarian corridors for refugees willing to leave the Rukban camp located on the US-controlled territory in Syria, the joint statement of the Russian and Syrian Joint Coordination Committees on repatriation of Syrian refugees said on Saturday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th February, 2019) Russia will help Syria to open two humanitarian corridors for refugees willing to leave the Rukban camp located on the US-controlled territory in Syria, the joint statement of the Russian and Syrian Joint Coordination Committees on repatriation of Syrian refugees said on Saturday.

On Friday, Russian Defense Ministry's spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said that the refugees in the Rukban camp had reported that the majority of them were being forcibly kept by the US-backed militants.

"In the current situation ... it was decided to open on the border of the 55-kilometer [over 34 miles] zone occupied by the United States two humanitarian corridors in the settlements of Jleb and Jabal al-Ghurab, where Syrian refugees can voluntarily and safely exit the area through the corresponding checkpoints," the statement said.

The humanitarian corridors will operate round the clock starting from Tuesday, according to the statement.

Security at the checkpoints will be ensured by the Syrian law enforcement agencies in cooperation with military police of the Russian Armed Forces.

"We call on the UN structures, including the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, to participate directly in this humanitarian operation, and on the American partners to show good will in the interests of the suffering people of Syria," the statement added.
