MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th February, 2019) Russian Ambassador to Venezuela Vladimir Zaemskiy and the Latin American country's Economy Vice President, Tareck El Aissami, discussed advancing cooperation ties between the two countries amid the current political turmoil in Venezuela, the South American state's Foreign Ministry said.

The talks took place late on Wednesday in Caracas.

"Economy Vice President Tareck El Aissami is meeting with His Excellency Ambassador of Russia Vladimir Zaemskiy for strengthening cooperation projects between the two countries within the framework of the plan of growth, recovery and economic prosperity," the ministry said in a statement.

In January, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov said that a meeting of the Russian-Venezuelan intergovernmental commission was scheduled for March. The official has expressed hope that the session would be held as planned amid the escalating political crisis in Venezuela.

Moscow has been supporting ties with Caracas in various areas for years. Notably, Caracas has been Latin America's largest importer of Russian military equipment and arms.

Moreover, Russia was one of the states that backed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro amid the political crisis, which erupted after opposition leader Juan Guaido proclaimed himself the country's interim president, seeking to oust Maduro.
