Venezuela's self-declared interim president Juan Guaido will ask the Organization Of American States (OAS) to help organize elections in Venezuela, the opposition leader's representative to the OAS Gustavo Tarre told reporters on Monday
WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th February, 2019) Venezuela's self-declared interim president Juan Guaido will ask the Organization Of American States (OAS) to help organize elections in Venezuela, the opposition leader's representative to the OAS Gustavo Tarre told reporters on Monday."The OAS has a very important experience advising countries in how they do democratic elections and observation of the election on order that the results will be accepted by everyone. That's what we are starting to ask the OAS," Tarre said. "There will be a formal letter from President Guaido asking for this cooperation from the OAS."
Tarre spoke after meeting with the Secretariat for Strengthening Democracy (SFD) under the direction of Secretary Francisco Guerrero.
"What we spoke about with Secretary Guerrero is that we asked them to be ready to receive this letter and be ready," Tarre said. "In order to start the construction of a democratic electoral process we don't have to wait the exit of Maduro. We started to work in order to do that. The national electoral authority is dominated by the National Assembly."
Tensions in Venezuela escalated when Guaido on January 23 declared himself the country's interim president, disputing last year's re-election of incumbent Maduro.
Guaido's declaration was almost immediately recognized by the United States and some of its allies.
Russia, China, Mexico, Turkey and Uruguay have said that they consider Maduro to be Venezuela's legitimate president.
