African Union's Parliament Says Looks To Speed Up Signing Of Malabo Protocol

ADDIS ABABA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th February, 2019) African Union (AU)'s Pan-African Parliament (PAP) is looking to speed up the signing of the Malabo Protocol, which will extend the African Court of Justice and Human Rights' jurisdiction, Stephen Masele, PAP first vice president and a member of parliament in Tanzania, told Sputnik on Sunday.

"The same obstacles countries are taking time to start the document before they sign and ratify. So I believe that with our own strategy we will be able to promote the Malabo Protocol to member states, and I think it will speed up the signing and the ratification of the protocol," Masele said on the sidelines of the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the AU, which is currently underway in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.

The AU adopted the Malabo Protocol back in June 2014. The document extends the jurisdiction of the African Court of Justice and Human Rights to transnational crimes and crimes under international law.
