Trump Nominee For World Bank President Must Convince Board He Backs Bank Agenda - Lawmaker

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th February, 2019) The World Bank's board of directors should reject President Donald Trump's nominee for the institution's president - US Treasury Undersecretary for International Affairs David Malpass - unless Malpass commits to the bank's mission, US Congressman Emanuel Cleaver said in a press release.

"If Mr. Malpass cannot commit to advancing this agenda and supporting the core mission of the World Bank, then the board should reject his nomination," Cleaver said on Friday.

Cleaver, who chairs the House of Representatives Financial Services Subcommittee on National Security, International Development and Monetary Policy, emphasized that the World Bank's goals are reducing global poverty, protecting workers and closing an income inequality gap.

Malpass has drawn opposition from some Democrats in the US Congress due to past criticism of the World Bank, including charges that the institution is overly concerned with its own expansion and not enough with its "core missions," such as reducing poverty.

Malpass has said he hopes to wind down World Bank lending to rapidly developing nations such as China and India to increase bank resources available for poorer nations.
