ROME (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th February, 2019) Venezuelan opposition parliament speaker Juan Guaido, who has declared himself interim president, sent letters to Italian deputy prime ministers, Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio, asking them to meet with a delegation of Venezuelan lawmakers, local media reported Wednesday.

Guaido offered Salvini to discuss during the meeting the action plan for restoring democracy in Venezuela through free elections and for settling the current humanitarian crisis, which has affected all Venezuelans and more than 100,000 Italians living in the country.

Di Maio was also asked to hold talks with the delegation aimed at an exchange of views on the "decisive transition" that Venezuela was going through.

Earlier this week, a number of European countries recognized Guaido as the Venezuelan interim president. The moves came after the deadline set by the European Union for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to announce snap a presidential election elapsed on Sunday.

EU countries were expected to recognize Guaido in a joint statement on Monday, but, according to a diplomatic source in Brussels, Italy blocked the statement.

China, Mexico, Russia, Turkey and Uruguay were among the countries that have voiced their support for Maduro.
