Syria's Return to Arab League May Yet Be Added to Tunis Summit's Agenda - LAS

The issue of Syria's possible return to the League of Arab States (LAS) is not on the agenda for the organization's upcoming summit in Tunis but still has a chance of being added during the upcoming meeting of the LAS foreign ministers, the director of the LAS center in Tunisia told Sputnik on Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th February, 2019) The issue of Syria's possible return to the League of Arab States (LAS) is not on the agenda for the organization's upcoming summit in Tunis but still has a chance of being added during the upcoming meeting of the LAS foreign ministers, the director of the LAS center in Tunisia told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"To date, the issue has not been on the agenda. The agenda is still being prepared. Perhaps the issue will be first raised at the foreign ministers' meeting in March. It is necessary to wait for the meeting of the foreign ministers, and then we will see whether the issue of Syria's return to the league will be on agenda," Abdullatif Abdulrahman Obaid said.

Asked whether there was a chance that Syrian President Bashar Assad would be at the upcoming summit, he reiterated that the issue might be raised at the ministerial meeting, noting that "if all Arab states agree, it will happen."

According to Obaid, the summit is expected to take place on March 31, while the foreign ministers' meeting is slated for March 4-6.

The 22-nation Arab League suspended Syria's membership in 2011 after a war broke out in the country. Several member states then recalled their ambassadors from Syria. Last year, they began making steps to re-engage Damascus and reopen embassies in what is widely being perceived as an attempt to bring Syria back in.

Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Sudan, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates would welcome Syria's return to the Arab League, a source in Brussels told Sputnik on Tuesday.
