MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th February, 2019) Iranian Foreign Minster Javad Zarif on Tuesday discussed with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen the issues of the Syrian Constitution, return of refugees, political reforms and the withdrawal of US troops from the country, Iran's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"During the talks, the two sides conferred on various issues related to the Arab country, including its new Constitution, the future of Syria, its reconstruction, and the return of Syrian refugees. They also exchanged views on political reforms, fight against terrorism, the withdrawal of US forces from Syria, and Iran's continued cooperation with the UN to resolve the outstanding problems in the war-torn country," the statement reads.

Earlier in the day, Zarif held meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups and terrorist organizations. In late 2017, the victory over the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) was declared in Syria and Iraq. Certain territories in the two countries are still being cleared from militants.

The international efforts have recently been focused on political settlement in Syria, the country's reconstruction and the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.
