Making CNIC mandatory for marriage registration

PTI MPA Musarrat Jamshed Cheema has submitted the amendment bill in the Punjab Assembly.

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 5th February, 2019) The production of CNIC is likely to be made mandatory for the registration of marriages.

According to details, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has suggested to amend the marriage registration in Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961.

PTI MPA Musarrat Jamshed Cheema has submitted the amendment bill in the Punjab Assembly.

An amendment to add section 1a in section 5(1) has been suggested. According to the amendment, the couple would not be able to register their marriage without a CNIC.

Currently, there is no law requiring the CNIC of groom and bride in order to register a marriage.

The amendment aims to curb the practice of child marriages. Moreover, it will also emphasise on the importance of CNIC.

Earlier, the local government department had sent a summary to Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar to increase the age limit for marriage.

The summary stated that the provincial government has decided to increase the age limit for marriage from 16 years to 18 years.

The decision has been taken so that the mother and infant remain healthy.

The summary said that the age limit for boys will remain 18 while the age limit for girls will be increased from 16 to 18.

The amendment will be finalised after the chief minister approves the summary.

Meanwhile, the Senate Committee for Human Rights has approved a draft bill increasing the minimum age of marriage to 18 years.
