UN Chief Has Not Received Information on Changes in Venezuela's Government - Spokesman

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has not received any official information concerning changes in the government of Venezuela, United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Monday

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th January, 2019) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has not received any official information concerning changes in the government of Venezuela, United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Monday.

"We have not received any information there have been any changes in the government of the country," Dujarric told reporters.

The spokesman explained that if a UN member-state undergoes a change in its government, a permanent diplomatic mission to the organization has to report about the change.

On Tuesday, the situation in Venezuela escalated when the opposition-controlled National Assembly declared that President Nicolas Maduro had usurped power. Opposition leader Jose Guaido proclaimed himself interim president the following day.

The United States along with its allies and some Latin American countries have recognized Guaido as the interim president of Venezuela. Russia, China, Mexico, Uruguay, and other countries, have expressed support for the Maduro government as Venezuela's legitimate authority.
