France's Macron, Egypt's Sisi Discussed Human Rights, Work of NGOs in Egypt

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is on a visit to Cairo, said on Monday that he had discussed with the Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah Sisi the situation with human rights in the Arab country

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th January, 2019) French President Emmanuel Macron, who is on a visit to Cairo, said on Monday that he had discussed with the Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah Sisi the situation with human rights in the Arab country.

"We had a long conversation on this issue, I conveyed to president Sisi a list of topics that seem most obvious and important to us. I hope that we will have a dialogue on these issues," the French president said at a joint press conference after the negotiations.

Macron explained that he had discussed with Sisi several specific issues in this area, including blocking of internet resources, as well as the work of non-governmental organizations.

"I frankly told president Sisi, in the spirit of cooperation that characterizes our relations, about the actions he could take regarding the activities of non-governmental organizations in Egypt," Macron said.

In particular, he called for a more balanced legislation governing the activities of NGOs.

"Active civil society is the best obstacle to extremism," the French leader added.

He also positively assessed situation with religious freedom in Egypt, which is home to the largest Christian community in the middle East.
