The possibility of holding a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Japanese counterpart, Taro Kono, in the German city of Munich is being explored, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov told reporters on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th January, 2019) The possibility of holding a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Japanese counterpart, Taro Kono, in the German city of Munich is being explored, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov told reporters on Monday.

"[The meeting] is being worked out, yes, probably. The possibility of a meeting between Lavrov and Kono in Munich is being studied," Morgulov said, answering a corresponding question.

Russia and Japan are currently trying to finalize the permanent peace treaty that the two countries never signed after the end of World War II due to a territorial dispute over the Kuril Islands. Earlier in January, Lavrov and Kono held their first round of peace consultations in Moscow, after which Japan's top diplomat said that their next meeting could be held at the Munich Security Conference.

The 55th Munich Security Conference is scheduled to take place on February 15-17.
