UN Chief Welcomes Qatar's $50Mln Donation To Syrian Refugees - Spokesman

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th January, 2019) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomes the allocation of $50 million by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to Syrian refugees and people in the region affected by the recent severe weather conditions, United Nations Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said in a press briefing on Thursday.

"The Secretary-General welcomes the recent announcement by the Emir of Qatar to allocate $50 million to support Syrian refugees and displaced persons in the middle East affected by the recent severe weather in the region," Haq said. "The Secretary-General is very grateful to the Emir and the people of Qatar for their generosity."

The Qatari emir decided earlier in January to support displaced people in Syria, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

Haq said the United Nations humanitarian aid partners continue to respond to individuals in need of assistance and reinforce alleviation efforts in Syria.

A severe cold wave has hit Syria resulting in the death of at least 15 children seeking refuge in the Rukban camp in the east of the country. The effects of the bad weather have been compounded by intense fighting between the Islamic State terror group (outlawed in Russia) and Turkish forces backed by the United States.
