Bolton Calls Venezuelan Top Court's Decision To Disavow Opposition Parliament 'Hollow Act'

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2019) A decision of Venezuela's Supreme Court to declare the leadership of the National Assembly illegitimate is a "hollow act," US National Security Adviser John Bolton said on Monday, reiterating Washington's support for the opposition-run governmental body.

On Monday, Venezuela's top court said the National Assembly did not have a "valid leadership" that was elected on January 5.

"Today's action by the Maduro-controlled Supreme Court was a predictable and hollow act. The United States resolutely supports the National Assembly, Venezuela's only legitimate democratic institution, and its brave effort to restore democracy," Bolton said on Twitter.

The National Assembly has appointed Juan Guaido as its speaker. Guaido said he was prepared to take over as the nation's interim president to organize a new presidential ballot after the parliament refused to recognize last May's election.
