The US Department of Defense (DOD) has identified three people involved in the country's Operation Inherent Resolve to fight the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) among the victims of the recent terror attack in Syria's Manbij, the Pentagon said in a press release on Friday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th January, 2019) The US Department of Defense (DOD) has identified three people involved in the country's Operation Inherent Resolve to fight the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) among the victims of the recent terror attack in Syria's Manbij, the Pentagon said in a press release on Friday.

On Wednesday, nearly 30 people were killed in Manbij in an explosion for which the Islamic State claimed responsibility. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) later that day confirmed that two US soldiers, one DOD civilian and one contractor were among the victims, adding that the DOD would withhold the identities of the service members until their families were notified.

"The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of one soldier, one sailor and one DOD civilian who were supporting Operation Inherent Resolve. The deceased are: Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jonathan R. Farmer, 37, of Boynton Beach, Florida ... Navy Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Shannon M. Kent, 35, of upstate New York ... DOD civilian Scott A. Wirtz of St. Louis, Missouri," the Pentagon said in the press release.

Farmer, Kent and Wirtz died "as a result of wounds sustained from a suicide improvised explosive device," the department added, noting that the incident was being investigated.

Operation Inherent Resolve was formally launched in 2014. The mission aims to eliminate the IS terrorists in designated areas of Syria and Iraq.
