Venezuelan Opposition Parliament Leader Freed After Brief Detention

BUENOS AIRES (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th January, 2019) Venezuela's opposition-controlled National Assembly speaker Juan Guaido was allowed to walk free after a brief detention on Sunday.

A message posted on Guaido's Twitter page claimed he had been seized by Venezuelan intelligence agents, just days after he said he was prepared to take over as the nation's interim president.

The speaker was detained en route to the northern coastal town of Caraballeda near Caracas, according to the TN news website. He was reportedly released less than an hour later.

The National Assembly has not recognized the re-election of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro for a second term in May. He was sworn in Thursday amid condemnation from other nations. The United States said it supported Venezuela's transition to a new government.
