US Senate Adjourns For Weekend With Government Shutdown Poised To Break Record

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th January, 2019) The US Senate on Friday afternoon adjourned for the weekend setting the Federal government on path to break the record for longest shutdown in the country's history.

"The #Senate meets next at 3pm [8:00 p.m. GMT] on Monday, January 14th," the Senate Press Gallery said in a statement.

The shutdown will enter its 22nd day on Saturday, surpassing the previous record set under the Clinton administration's 21-day closure that began in December 1995.

When the Senate reconvenes on Monday at 5:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m. GMT) they will resume consideration of the motion to proceed on the Strengthening America's Security in the middle East Act, a bill related to Syria sanctions.

More than 800,000 federal government workers missed their first paycheck on Friday due to the shutdown. About half of federal workers have worked without pay since the shutdown began December 22, with the remainder furloughed.

US President Donald Trump is demanding at least $5 billion to construct a wall on the southern border, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi have refused to provide any funds, resulting in a breakdown of negotiations to reopen the government.
