Democrats Urge Trump To Reopen US Government Amid Talks Over Border Security

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th January, 2019) President Donald Trump must end the government shutdown and put the border security issue aside to be negotiated separately with the Democrats, Senator Chuck Schumer said during a message broadcasted in response to Trump's White House address.

Minutes earlier Trump during his first national address form the Oval Office called for $5.7 billion to build a "physical barrier" on the southern border. The issue is at the center of a government shutdown that is into its third week.

"Stop manufacturing a crisis and reopen the government," Schumer said on Tuesday night. "Mr. President, reopen the government and we can work to end our differences over border security but end this shutdown now."

There was bipartisan legislation allowing the debate on border security to continue and both the president and the Democrats wanted stronger borders, Schumer said.

"We all agree we need to secure our borders... We don't govern in a temper tantrum... President Trump has appealed to fear not facts," the Senator Minority Leader said.

In his address, Trump said that over the years thousands of citizens in the United States had been killed by illegal immigrants and thousands more may die if no action was taken on the illegal immigration issue.
