Turkey, US Discuss Future of US Bases in Syria After Withdrawal - Presidential Spokesman

Turkish Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said Tuesday that he discussed during the talks with US National Security Adviser John Bolton the future of US bases in Syria after pullout of Washington's troops from the country

ANKARA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th January, 2019) Turkish Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said Tuesday that he discussed during the talks with US National Security Adviser John Bolton the future of US bases in Syria after pullout of Washington's troops from the country.

Bolton has held talks with Kalin on Tuesday in the framework of his trip to Turkey and Israel following the start of US withdrawal from Syria.

"We welcome the US decision to withdraw troops, but how will it be, what will happen to US bases in Syria? Its future and other issues need to be resolved, and today we have discussed this in detail. Our military continue bilateral talks to coordinate actions with respect to the pullout of troops. But there are some important principles, first of all, political unity and territorial integrity of Syria," Kalin told journalists after the negotiations.

According to Kalin, Syria should be fully cleared of militant groups.

On December 19, US President Donald Trump declared victory over the Islamic State (IS, outlawed in Russia) terror group in Syria and said he would withdraw the approximately 2,000 US troops currently on the ground in that country. Later, the White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders reported that the United States began withdrawing troops from Syria, but a victory over the IS does not mean the end to the existence of the coalition.
