CJP for imposing special 'dam tax' on mobile cards

The CJP asked Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman if a special tax can be imposed on mobile cards for dams.

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 7th January, 2019) Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar has sought suggestions if a special tax can be imposed on mobile phone cards to collect funds for the construction of dams.

A five member bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar held the hearing of case regarding construction of Diamer Bhasha and Mohmand dams on Monday.

Minister for Water Resources Faisal Vawda and Water and Power Development Authority Chairman Muzammil Hussain appeared before the court.

The Chairman WAPDA briefed the court about the progress on dams work.

He informed the court that Mohmand Dam will be completed by 2023.

The CJP remarked that the Supreme Court is monitoring the construction of dams.

The CJP asked Federal board of Revenue (FBR) chairman if a special tax can be imposed on mobile cards for dams.

Earlier in the hearing, the CJP rebuked Faisal Vawda for changing the date of Mohmand Dam’s groundbreaking ceremony.

“The prime minister saw his own schedule and changed the date without considering that we have work as well,” he said.

“What has the government done till now other than the announcement that water will finish by 2025? We are collecting funds for you,” he further asked.

When Faisal Vawda apologized to the CJP, he said, “Tell the prime minister to go inaugurate Mohmand Dam himself.”

Faisal Vawda then insisted, “No, you will have to be a part of it. We will invite you for the inauguration and I will request you to come.”

To this, the CJP remarked, “The prime minister does not know how many matters are pending.”

The CJP summoned all four ministers to appear in court in the next hearing and inform it regarding what needs to be done about Nai Gaj Dam.
