Sudanese Police Use Tear Gas on Protesters Near Khartoum

Sudanese security forces have fired tear gas at protesters attending anti-government demonstrations near the capital city of Khartoum, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Friday.

KHARTOUM (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th January, 2019) Sudanese security forces have fired tear gas at protesters attending anti-government demonstrations near the capital city of Khartoum, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Friday.

About 400 people protested outside a mosque in Omdurman, the second largest city in Sudan lying on the Nile opposite Khartoum, demanding the resignation of the government.

On Thursday, Sudanese President Omar Bashir pledged higher wages and pensions, more housing and other social welfare measures to end weeks of protests.

The unrest erupted across Sudan in late December over the rising cost of bread and general economic hardship, leaving 19 killed and almost 400 injured, according to the country's authorities.

At the same time, Amnesty International said on December 25 citing credible reports that 37 protesters had been shot dead by Sudanese security forces over five days of demonstrations.
