South Korean Defense Ministry Urges Japan to Apologize for Flying Over Its Navy Ship

South Korea's Defense Ministry on Friday urged Japan to stop distorting facts and apologize for a low-altitude flight by a Japanese patrol plane that took place in December and allegedly endangered the South Korean Navy ship.

TOKYO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th January, 2019) South Korea's Defense Ministry on Friday urged Japan to stop distorting facts and apologize for a low-altitude flight by a Japanese patrol plane that took place in December and allegedly endangered the South Korean Navy ship.

According to the Japanese side, the South Korean destroyer purposefully directed its fire-control radar at Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force patrol plane in the Sea of Japan on December 20. Seoul responded by saying that it had been rescuing a North Korean fishing ship in distress, using an optical camera and not the radar.

"Urging Japan to apologize for interfering with the humanitarian rescue operation and to cease distorting the truth," the South Korean Defense Ministry's spokeswoman, Choi Hyun Soo, said.

The defense ministry released a video dismissing Japan's claims that its plane acted in compliance with the international law.

According to the ministry, Japan cites such international documents as International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Convention on International Civil Aviation to justify the actions of Maritime Self-Defense Force plane, but they do not apply to military aircraft.
