Sudan President Vows Wage Hikes in Bid to Quell Protests

Sudanese President Omar Bashir pledged higher wages and pensions, more housing and other social welfare measures to end weeks of anti-government protests.

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd January, 2019) Sudanese President Omar Bashir pledged higher wages and pensions, more housing and other social welfare measures to end weeks of anti-government protests.

"The current wage is inadequate. Steps will be taken this month to raise it to the adequate level," Bashir said in a speech at a rally of his supporters in the capital city of Khartoum.

The president praised improvements of recent years to the country's infrastructure, saying there were plans to build more affordable housing for different social groups.

Unrest erupted across the country two weeks ago over the rising cost of bread and general economic hardship. Nationwide demonstrations have led to at least 19 deaths, while almost 400 people have been injured.
