Sudan Parties Call on President to Set Transitional Council for Ruling State Amid Protests

A total of 22 Sudanese political parties have signed a petition calling on the country's president, Omar Bashir, to create a transitional council for governing Sudan, and also to dissolve the country's cabinet and parliament, local media reported on Wednesday

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd January, 2019) A total of 22 Sudanese political parties have signed a petition calling on the country's president, Omar Bashir, to create a transitional council for governing Sudan, and also to dissolve the country's cabinet and parliament, local media reported on Wednesday.

The Al Arabiya broadcaster specified that the transitional council is supposed to govern the country until a new national government is formed.

The 22 parties, which include Islamist factions and breakaway groups from Sudanese major traditional parties, have also said that the council would set a date for democratic elections in the country.

The ruling National Congress Party has rejected their call.

On Monday, Bashir ordered to set up a commission that would be tasked with investigating cases of violence that occurred during anti-government protests that have been hitting the country since mid-December 2018.

The protests were triggered by the government's decision to increase bread prices. A state of emergency has been declared in a number of Sudanese cities, since over 30 protesters have been killed and hundreds of others injured.
