New York Police To Deploy Drones To Protect New Year's Celebration - Deputy Commissioner

NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th December, 2018) The New York Police Department will deploy drones over Times Square for the first time as part of robust security measures for New Year's Eve celebration, Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller said during a press conference.

"We will be deploying NYPD drones for overwatch," Miller told reporters on Friday. "That's going to give us a visual aid and flexibility to move a camera to a certain spot with great rapidity through a tremendous crowd."

In addition, NYPD will have a team of intelligence detectives embedded in hotels around the area well in advance to monitor the situation, Miller said.

Other safety measures include 1,225 cameras throughout Times Square, numerous blocker cars, sand trucks and cement barriers, Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison added during the briefing.

New York police will have sufficient security footprint in all major public venues, including Park Slope and Coney Island, according to the deputy commissioner.

New York authorities have not identified any credible or specific threats to New Year's celebration.
