Kosovo to Joint UN With West's Help - Parliament Speaker

The self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo will soon achieve full recognition of its independence from Serbia, and will then join the United Nations with the West's assistance, Kadri Veseli, the speaker of the Kosovar parliament, said on Thursday.

BELGRADE (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th December, 2018) The self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo will soon achieve full recognition of its independence from Serbia, and will then join the United Nations with the West's assistance, Kadri Veseli, the speaker of the Kosovar parliament, said on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, Veseli held a meeting with US, UK, German, French and Italian ambassadors to Pristina. Kosovar President Hashim Thaci, Kosovar Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, and members of the Kosovar government took part in the meeting.

"Kosovo is ready for the final stage of its dialogue with Serbia. Together with the West, we'll celebrate our triumph, having enabled the recognition of Kosovo's independence from Serbia, UN membership, and speed-up of the Euro-Atlantic integration [process]," Veseli said, as quoted by the Radio Television of Kosovo broadcaster.

Veseli emphasized that Kosovo had been cooperating with its Western allies "on every important process" since the 1998-1999 Kosovo War,

He added that this cooperation had always resulted in "victory for Kosovo."

The Kosovo War of 1998-1999 between the ethnically Kosovar Albanian forces and the former Yugoslavia, then consisting of Serbia and Montenegro, ended after the UN-backed international intervention following NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia's forces.

Kosovo proclaimed its independence from Serbia in 2008 and was recognized by over 100 UN member states. The move was not, however, recognized by Serbia and two permanent members of the UN Security Council Russia and China. In 2011, Brussels launched several rounds of talks between Belgrade and Kosovo, bringing the parties to the negotiating table for the first time since Kosovo's secession.
