Sudanese President Says 'Traitors, Mercenaries' Organized Protests in Country

Sudanese President Omar Bashir said on Tuesday that traitors and mercenaries were behind the ongoing protests in the country, and pledged to continue implementing development programs despite unrest.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th December, 2018) Sudanese President Omar Bashir said on Tuesday that traitors and mercenaries were behind the ongoing protests in the country, and pledged to continue implementing development programs despite unrest.

"Certain traitors, agents, mercenaries exploited the difficulties of [people's] lives for [the purpose of] sabotage in the interest of Sudan's enemies," the president said in a speech in front of a mass rally, as quoted by SUNA news agency.

The president called the rally a response to all traitors and agents, as well as to those who spread rumors about his arrest. He also promised that the government would go ahead with implementing development projects and improving the population's living conditions.

The protests erupted in Sudan on December 19 over the government's decision to increase bread prices. The following day, the government shut down the internet to stop the protesters. On Monday, the Sudanese president reportedly pledged to proceed with economic reforms in the country.

According to human rights organization Amnesty International, 37 people have been killed by the Sudanese security forces during five days of anti-government protests.
