Suspension of GST, mobile taxes causes revenue shortfall of Rs 58 billion

These two steps have created a shortfall of Rs 58 billion to the national kitty.

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 22nd December, 2018) The national exchequer had to face a revenue shortfall of Rs 58 billion after additional taxes on mobile cards were suspended.

According to details, the government’s decision to reduce general sales tax and Supreme Court’s order to suspend withholding tax on mobile cards has caused a revenue shortfall of Rs 38 billion ad Rs 20 billion to national exchequer, respectively.

These two steps have created a shortfall of Rs 58 billion to the national kitty.

On the charge of a Rs100 prepaid mobile card, a 19.5% federal excise duty was charged along with 12.5% withholding tax and 10% service/maintenance charge.

According to statistics revealed by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority in January this year, the number of mobile phone users stands at 144 million as compared to 142.5 million in October 2017.

The Supreme Court had taken suo-motu notice against mobile phone companies charging extra taxes.

The court in June ordered to suspend all the taxes imposed by Federal board of Revenue (FBR) on mobile cards, including service charges and excise duty.
