Moscow Hopes Israel, Turkey To Recognize Crimea's Reunification With Russia - Kremlin

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st December, 2018) Moscow hopes that Israel and Turkey will recognize the legality of Crimea's reunification with Russia, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, said on Thursday.

Turkey has repeatedly said it does not recognize the reunification, while Israel has maintained neutrality over the issue. However, earlier this week, Israel supported the UNGA resolution condemning the reunification.

"We hope that after some time passes, we will be able to convince our partners in Turkey and Israel that the Crimean residents have made the right choice and their decision made several years ago was right," Peskov told Russia's Channel One.

Crimea's reunification with Russia was one of the issues where the positions of Moscow and its Turkish and Israeli partners did not match, the spokesman added.

"Neither Ankara, nor Tel Aviv is ready to agree to our reasoning about the absolute compliance of the process of Crimea's reunification with Russia with the international law and the unacceptability of the use of any other terms here," Peskov pointed out.

Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014 as a result of a referendum at which over 96 percent of the peninsula's residents backed the option. However, western states have not recognized the vote despite Moscow arguing that the referendum had been held in line with international law.
