Russian submarines cost over 40 percent less than the rival ones from China and the United States, while their technical characteristics top those of foreign counterparts, Russia's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

The price of Varshavyanka-class submarines is 43 percent lower than that of the Chinese Yuan project submarines, and Lada-class submarines are half the price of the German Type 212A submarines," the ministry said in documents prepared for an extended panel meeting.
According to the materials, the Russian Yasen-class nuclear-powered multipurpose attack submarines, (NATO reporting name Severodvinsk) have 2.5 times more torpedo tubes and 2.7 times more rocket launchers than the US Virginia-class subs.
However, the autonomy of days spent under water by Virginia-type submarines is 11 percent higher than that of the Yasen-class subs, the ministry noted.
At the same time, the Russian Lada-class or Project 677 submarines (NATO reporting name St. Petersburg) top Germany's Type 212 class submarines in terms of stealthiness and detection range of hydro-acoustic complex. German submarine's speed is also lower by 24 percent in comparison with the Russian counterpart, according to the ministry.
