Pompeo Discredits State Dept. by Denying Saudi Prince Role in Khashoggi Murder - Senator

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discredits the State Department by claiming there is no direct evidence that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was involved in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Senator Dick Durbin said in an interview on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discredits the State Department by claiming there is no direct evidence that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was involved in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Senator Dick Durbin said in an interview on Wednesday.

Pompeo told Fox news earlier in the day that some of the reporting on the CIA findings had been inaccurate and there is no direct evidence that the Saudi crown prince was involved in Khashoggi's murder.

"Secretary of State Pompeo discredits himself, the State Department and our nation with these statements," Durbin, the No. 2 ranking Democrat in the US Senate, told MSNBC.

Durbin said to argue that the crown prince played no role contradicts obvious intelligence that the CIA showed Pompeo and lawmakers.

Pompeo said the United States has already held a number of individuals accountable for the killing by imposing sanctions.

Khashoggi went missing after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2. After weeks of denials, the Saudi chief prosecutor admitted that the US-based columnist had been killed and dismembered inside the diplomatic mission.
