UN Special Envoy Proposes Houthis To Transfer Heavy Weapons To Yemeni Government - Source

DOHA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths proposed the Houthi Shia rebels to transfer heavy weapons, drones and ballistic missiles to the Yemeni government troops, a source close to Griffiths told Sputnik on Monday.

"The project envisages solution of military and security issues as well as political settlement in accordance with a temporary mechanism to stop bloodshed. The Houthis will be given a particular deadline to withdraw forces under the supervision of the military committee as well as to transfer heavy weapons, including missiles and drones to the government," the source said.

According to the source, the project also envisages that Yemen maintains relations with neighboring countries and also includes full cessation of hostilities throughout the country, including the areas bordering Saudi Arabia.

The Yemeni conflict between the government forces led by President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and the Houthi rebels has been raging for several years. The Saudi-led coalition carries out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request since March 2015.

Last week the UN-backed reconciliation talks kicked off in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.
