MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th December, 2018) The Russian cabinet issued a degree on Monday pledging an extra $2 million in funds for the UN World Food Programme's (WFP) efforts in Syria.

The Federal budget money will be disbursed in a single payment by the end of the month to "cover expenses related to food aid to the Syrian Arab Republic," the decree read.

The Russian foreign affairs and emergencies ministries will soon inform the Syrian government and the WFP about the contribution.

Conflict-torn Syria continues to rely heavily on external financial support, mostly from Russia and Iran. A UN report on food security in October estimated that 5.5 million in this mostly rural country require some form of food assistance.
